The Curse of Oulton!
Looking to build on our impressive start to the season at Donington, we were full of hope going into round 2 at Oulton Park. However, the Cheshire circuit has not often been that lucky for us, and this visit was to prove no exception!
Qualifying
The format of this meeting saw Class 2 of the Club Championship running with the Porsche Open Series. This made for a slightly fraught qualifying session, with mirrors regularly occupied by the faster Open boys and it was not until the final few minutes that we were presented with a clear track. The upshot was that we were able to post a time that would claim third in class, only a few tenths off pole.
Race
With arguably the worst start of my racing career, all the hard work from qualifying was undone in one fell swoop! We entered the first corner near the back of the pack with it all now to do. We set about getting on with the job and tried to pick our way through the field. After a couple of laps we caught our erstwhile team mate Cieran Brewer. A good run through Old Hall saw us pass Cieran going down the Avenue but as we entered Cascades, a fairly meaty tap in the rear wing saw the car pitch into a spin, skip through the gravel and come to rest in the tyre wall. Our race was over!
Reflection
We left the meeting immensely disappointed! The car had been right on the pace and we had failed to capitalise on it. I felt bad for the team as all of their hard work had come to nothing. I'll be going back to racing driver school to learn how to make a decent start before the next round at Brands Hatch, where we intend to put the record straight!
